Pi Imaging and abberior instruments release success story showcasing breakthrough in super-resolution microscopy
Lausanne, June 26, 2025 – Pi Imaging is pleased to announce the release of a new success story detailing its collaboration with abberior instruments, a leading innovator in super-resolution microscopy. The partnership led to the development of MATRIX STED, an advanced imaging system that tackles longstanding challenges in STED microscopy, specifically, background suppression, signal clarity, and resolution in densely labeled samples. At the heart of MATRIX STED is the MATRIX detector, powered by Pi Imaging’s SPAD 23 chipset, a compact and high-performance single-photon detector array that enables improved image contrast and acquisition speed. This integration has allowed researchers to push the limits of what’s visible in thick and complex biological samples.
The jointly developed system combines innovative optical design with smart detection, enabling techniques such as differential detection, image scanning microscopy (ISM), and faster FLIM acquisition. As a result, MATRIX STED provides unprecedented detail and readability in high-resolution biological imaging.
Peter Kraemer, CCO at abberior instruments, noted that “Our collaboration with Pi Imaging has enabled us to overcome key limitations in background suppression and signal clarity. The MATRIX detector is a powerful addition to our portfolio, helping researchers push the boundaries of superresolution imaging.”
Michel Antolovic, CEO at Pi Imaging Technology, added, “We are very pleased to contribute to the STED community through our partnership with abberior instruments, a consistent leader in innovation. This collaboration led to improved superresolution imaging, which is part of our missions.”
The success story, now available as a downloadable PDF, provides an in-depth look at the challenges, innovations, and outcomes of this collaborative effort. It highlights how Pi Imaging’s sensor technology is helping redefine the capabilities of modern microscopy.
